Monash University, Faculty of Law

James created Just Cases while employed at Monash University. The success of the show, with 200,000+ downloads, was the inspiration for Miniature.

THE BRIEF

Monash University’s Faculty of Law had a wealth of academic expertise and compelling legal cases, but those stories were largely reaching people through teaching and specialist discussion. James Pattison created Just Cases to make that knowledge accessible to a wider audience, including listeners without a legal education.

HOW JAMES WORKED WITH MONASH

James developed a format in which a legal expert could explain a case they knew closely, with host Melissa Castan (Monash University) guiding the conversation. The editorial work established what a listener needed to understand, why the case mattered and how to follow the people and decisions at its centre.

Research and interview preparation helped translate specialist material into a narrative without losing the legal reasoning. Contributors included Dr Stephen Gray, Dr Jo Kyriakakis and Dr Colin Campbell, whose episodes explored criminal law, the legal questions surrounding Uber and disability discrimination. The range allowed the faculty to draw on expertise across its academic community.

James combined show development and editorial preparation with interview production, audio production and publishing. Working within the faculty enabled him to connect the academic contribution with the practical work required to produce and release the programme.

WHAT IT DELIVERED

Just Cases has recorded more than 200,000 downloads. The archive gives Monash Law a lasting collection of accessible legal stories and demonstrates how academic expertise can find an audience beyond the classroom. It is also part of the experience James brought to founding Miniature.
