A MINIATURE ORIGINAL PRODUCTION
THE IDEA
James Pattison and legal academic Professor Melissa Castan (Monash University) developed Case In Point to help a general audience understand the people and consequences behind significant legal cases. The programme addresses a familiar challenge in specialist communication: explaining complex material clearly while giving listeners a reason to care about it.
HOW WE DEVELOPED IT
Miniature built the programme around researched interviews with contributors who know a case closely. Preparation establishes the central story, the legal context a listener needs and the questions that will connect the two. Melissa’s legal expertise and James’s production experience guide the development of each conversation.
The interviews explore what happened, who was affected and why the outcome matters. Mark Dreyfus, Australia’s Attorney-General at the time of his 2024 interview, discusses Australia’s case against Japanese whaling. Other contributors include Brian Reed (S-Town, This American Life, Serial Productions) on press freedom, Lynette Russell on Aboriginal resistance, and Marc Trabsky on the ownership of human remains.
Miniature develops the interview structure and supporting material, then shapes the recordings through editing and audio production. That work makes space for explanation and personal experience while keeping the story clear for someone without legal training.
WHAT IT DEMONSTRATES
For organisations considering a podcast, the programme provides examples of contributor selection, editorial preparation and production that make specialist knowledge accessible to a broader audience.
PRODUCTION RESPONSIBILITY
Case In Point is a Miniature Original, independently developed and produced rather than commissioned by a client. Miniature handles the concept, research, editorial development, interviews, audio production, editing and publishing.
