THE BRIEF
Monash Law academic Associate Professor Becky Batagol wanted to bring the proposals in her major research project The Feminist Legislation Project to people beyond the book’s existing readership. The research offers detailed proposals for fairer laws, but a podcast needed its own structure to engage parliamentarians, policymakers, students and members of the public without assuming specialist legal knowledge. Topics include laws affecting victims of crime, public toilet access and women’s experiences in the construction industry.
HOW WE WORKED
Miniature worked with Becky and co-host Professor Kate Seear to understand the project’s purpose, intended audiences and approach to reform. We developed a format that could explain each law reform proposal clearly while also making room for discussion and a healthy interrogation of ideas.
Each episode opens with the main guest delivering a scripted speech in an imagined parliament. The guest then explains their proposal in an in-depth interview with the hosts. After this, another contributor responds to the proposal from a different feminist perspective.
Miniature helped identify contributors and episode angles, develop scripts and prepare interviews. Coaching and direction during recording supported the hosts in a new medium, including follow-up questions and opportunities to clarify an idea. Editing and sound design brought the parliamentary setting and conversations together, while detailed show notes provided further ways to engage with the material, including links in each episode for listeners to download the full book for free.
WHAT WE DELIVERED
Feminist Acts gives The Feminist Legislation Project an accessible public programme that the faculty and contributors can share. We delivered a 10-episode series, and a library of highlight reels to share on social media. Miniature was also engaged to record a live episode at the official launch of the podcast, which also brought researchers, students and legal practitioners together to celebrate the show and discuss an additional law reform proposal about human rights in Victoria.
